Standard Poodle Crossbreeds Make Good Companion Dogs

The standard Poodle dog breed is a type of water dog that is considered to be the second most intelligent dog breed and is skillful in many dog sports and activities, including agility, obedience, tracking, herding, performing, and assisting humans. Historically, pure-bred standard Poodles have been cross-bred with other pure-bred dog breeds to create good companion dogs. If you are looking for a companion dog, here are three standard Poodle crossbreeds to consider:

Goldendoodles:  A Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a standard Poodle. This crossbreed is intelligent, friendly, affectionate, and moderately active. A Goldendoodle should be walked each day and have an active play session with a ball or agility training to give them adequate exercise and stimulate their mind. A Goldendoodle is a loyal companion dog, loves to be with you and your family members, and is an inside dog. Goldendoodles have a medium coat and can be groomed to have a shorter coat in warmer weather.

Bernedoodles:  A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a standard Poodle. This crossbreed is intelligent, loyal, social, sweet, and has lots of character. Bernedoodles are calm dogs, but they also like activity. If you have children and like to hike and play sports, this dog can be a good companion dog. Above all, Bernedoodles want to be with you and your family at all times. With this kind of loyalty, you can easily train your Bernedoodle to have the temperament that you want and always look to you for leadership and direction. Bernedoodles have a short to medium coat and require little to no grooming maintenance.

Aussiedoodles:  An Aussiedoodle is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a standard Poodle. This crossbreed is intelligent, social, loyal to their owners, and affectionate. The Australian Shepherd part of this dog breed makes them easy to train because they love to have a pack leader and a job to perform. Aussiedoodles like exercise so they should be given daily long walks and games of catch with a ball or frisbee. These are loyal dogs and like to be with you whether you are active or resting. Aussiedoodles have a longer coat and should be groomed regularly.

Although the above crossbreeds are all part standard Poodle, they each have different personalities and dispositions. When choosing a crossbreed, contact a breeder that can give you specific information about the parents of their cross-bred dogs. It is best to choose a crossbreed from parents that are registered breeds with calm dispositions. Make several visits to breeders like Sterling Brook Doodles to see and interact with the dogs and choose one that is responsive to you. If possible, take the dog home for a few days to see if it is comfortable and relaxed in your home, responds well to you and your family, and develops a good rapport with you as the alpha leader. All of this background information and behavior experimentation will give you a good idea if the dog you are considering is right for you
